Balayage
When it comes to hair colour services at our salons, there’s nothing quite like a smooth transitioning balayage. The great quality here is that it allows for a hand painted gradual faded effect to your natural hair colour. The lightening blends in nicely, grows out more naturally for a sun-kissed lift of the hair.
Whichever the result you’re looking for, our talented hairstylists are happy to work on natural tones, but also colour to natural. All to find the combination you want to achieve, and give you a unique look that’s totally you! We’ve got some Frequently Asked Questions below, do get in touch or book a free consultation if you need advice from our team.
Hair Balayage – Frequently Asked Questions
What is balayage, and how is it applied?
Balayage, which means “sweeping” in French, is a freehand hair colouring technique. The goal is to paint highlights on the hair by hand to create a natural and gradual sun-kissed look. Balayage traditionally doesn’t use foils, although some stylists may use them to create a stronger lift in places. The result is a softer, more blended transition between colours than highlights.
How does balayage differ from traditional highlights?
The main difference would be in the result being a more natural, graduated effect. This technique allows for a customised and less noticeable regrowth line.
What is the difference between balayage and ombre?
Where balayage creates a softer more blended result, ombre or dip-dye offers a more dramatic two-tone effect with a clear transition between darker roots and lighter ends.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Like any colour appointment, time depends on hair length, thickness, and desired outcome. On average, expect the session to last between 2 to 4 hours.
How long does balayage last, and how often should it be refreshed?
Balayage is the more low maintenance option when it comes to hair lightening. As it allows for natural regrowth of the hair, touch-ups are required less often. You should count 8 to 12 weeks before heading back to the salon, all of course depending on hair growth and hair care routine.
Is balayage suitable for all hair types and colours?
Yes, balayage can be done on a variety of hair types, from curly to straight, thin to thick, light to dark. An experienced stylist can tailor the balayage to bring a lift that looks natural and summery.
Can balayage be done on previously coloured or dark hair?
Absolutely. A consultation with your stylist is well recommended to talk through where the previous colour was done. Achieving the desired lightness on dark or previously coloured hair might require multiple sessions, all to make sure hair health is kept as a priority.
Will balayage damage my hair?
If done by a professional stylist and salon quality products are used, balayage is generally less damaging. As it doesn’t involve saturating the entire hair strand, where no foil is used there’s a reduced risk of over-processing.
How should I care for my hair after getting balayage?
To help maintain the vibrancy of your balayage, sulfate-free, colour-safe shampoos and conditioners are recommended. Further advice would be to use deep-conditioning treatments, minimise heat styling, and protect your hair from sun exposure to prolong the colours longevity.
